DRAFT — PENDING ATTORNEY REVIEW. This document is a placeholder outline and is not yet in effect. No forms, accounts, video uploads, or data-collection programs are live on this site. The final policy will be prepared with legal counsel (including COPPA and state privacy law review) and published here before any personal data is collected.

Privacy Policy

This draft outlines the commitments the final policy will implement. Until it is finalized, this website is informational only: you can read every page without creating an account or submitting any personal information.

What the final policy will cover

  • What information is collected through each service, and what is never collected
  • How the pay-for-data program obtains informed, revocable consent, including consent involving minors, reviewed for COPPA compliance
  • The consent tier structure: running the service, behavioral research, nonprofit tool development, commercial use (a company's own research as well as the products it sells), and the Institute's own model training, each granted separately and refusable on its own
  • Verifiable parental consent obtained separately for each disclosure purpose, rather than one signature that covers everything at once
  • A child's assent alongside parental permission, in language the child can follow, and what happens when a child old enough to answer says no
  • Which states the pay-for-data program operates in, which are excluded, and the statute behind each exclusion. Free resources, courses, and video observation are available in all 50 states.
  • The standard applied to footage before it is licensed, and the honest limits of that standard for video: what is stripped, how families are coded, and why video of a child cannot be described as anonymous
  • Who may license footage, and the restrictions they accept: no attempt to identify anyone, no resale, no sublicensing, use limited to the licensed purpose, and deletion on demand
  • The additional restriction on research and nonprofit licensees, who pay a licence fee but may not sell anything built on contributed footage. Commercialising requires a commercial licence, which is a paid grant for the family
  • How participants are compensated, including which grants are paid and which are unpaid contributions, at a single rate that does not vary
  • How footage sent for a video observation is handled, retained, and deleted, and the behavioral research permission that the service is conditioned on
  • Withdrawal mechanics: how to withdraw, what is deleted, how licensees are notified, and the limits, since published research cannot be unpublished and a model already trained cannot be untrained
  • Data retention, security measures, and breach notification
  • Rights available under applicable state and federal privacy laws
